General guidelines and code of conduct
1. Clear communication is key!
For any verbal or written communication, it is critical to business operations to ensure understanding of the information. We expect employees to clearly communicate information passed between customers, coworkers or any other parties regarding Capital Salvage. This includes information that affects the operations, wellbeing or enjoyment of anyone associated with Capital Salvage in any way. Ask questions until you understand, and paraphrase to verify the message or information. There are no “stupid questions”, it’s better to ask first if you are not sure.
2. Standards for Cell Phone use
The Capital Salvage cell phone policy offers general guidelines for using personal and company cell phones during work hours.
The purpose of this policy is to help us all get the most out of the advantages cell phones offer our company while minimizing distractions, accidents, and frustrations improper cell phone use can cause. This policy applies to all Capital Salvage employees.
Cell Phone Use Guidelines:The following are Capital Salvage's basic guidelines for proper employee cell phone use during work hours. In general, cell phones should not be used when they could pose a security or safety risk, or when they distract from work tasks:
Never use a cell phone while driving.
Never use a cell phone while operating, or close to, equipment.
Do not use cell phones for surfing the internet or gaming during work hours.
Avoid using work cell phones for personal tasks.
Avoid using personal cell phones for work tasks.
Do not use cell phones during meetings.
Do not use cell phones to record confidential information.
We realize the cell phones can be great tools for our employees. We encourage employees to use company issued cell phones for the following:
For making or receiving work calls in the appropriate place and situation to do so.
For other work-related communication, such as text messaging or emailing in appropriate places and situations.
To schedule and keep track of appointments.
To carry out work-related research.
To keep track of work tasks.
To keep track of work contacts.
All personal phones must be kept in lockers in the break room while you are on shift. We can provide locks or you may bring your own.
Disciplinary Action: Improper use of cell phones may result in disciplinary action. Continued use of cell phones at inappropriate times or in ways that distract from work may lead to having cell phone privileges revoked.Cell phone usage for illegal or dangerous activity, for purposes of harassment, or in ways that violate the company confidentiality policy may result in employee termination.
3. Policy for Internet Use at Work:
Employees may use the Internet when appropriate to access information needed to conduct company business. Use of the Internet must not disrupt or injure the company computer network. Use of the Internet must not interfere with an employee's productivity
4. Professional Behaviour Policy
a. Be inclusive. We welcome and support people of all backgrounds and identities. This includes, but is not limited to members of any sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, race, ethnicity, culture, national origin, social and economic class, educational level, color, immigration status, sex, age, size, family status, political belief, religion, and mental and physical ability.
b. Be considerate. We all depend on each other to produce the best work we can as a company. Your decisions will affect clients and colleagues, and you should take those consequences into account when making decisions.
c. Be respectful. We won't all agree all the time, but disagreement is no excuse for disrespectful behavior. We will all experience frustration from time to time, but we cannot allow that frustration to become personal attacks. An environment where people feel uncomfortable or threatened is not a productive or creative one.
d. Choose your words carefully.Always conduct yourself professionally. Be kind to others. Do not insult or put down others. Harassment and exclusionary behavior aren't acceptable. This includes, but is not limited to:
Threats of violence.
Insubordination.
Discriminatory jokes and language.
Sharing sexually explicit or violent material via electronic devices or other means.
Personal insults, especially those using racist or sexist terms.
Unwelcome sexual attention.
Advocating for, or encouraging, any of the above behavior.
e. Don't harass. In general, if someone asks you to stop something, then stop. When we disagree, try to understand why. Differences of opinion and disagreements are mostly unavoidable. What is important is that we resolve disagreements and differing views constructively.
f. Make differences into strengths. We can find strength in diversity. Different people have different perspectives on issues, and that can be valuable for solving problems or generating new ideas. Being unable to understand why someone holds a viewpoint doesn’t mean that they’re wrong. Don’t forget that we all make mistakes, and blaming each other doesn’t get us anywhere.Instead, focus on resolving issues and learning from mistakes.
5. Accountability
We work as a team. Blaming others or “passing the buck” is discouraged. Mistakes are a natural part of life, and they provide a valuable opportunity to learn and grow. We encourage you to share the lessons you have learned, so that we may further refine our processes and operations.
Maintain accountability for the things that one can control and take steps to mitigate the factors that one cannot control
if there is any interruption, issue, or conflict, focus first on personal behaviour. Attempt to solve or find a workaround in the most efficient way possible.
If you are unable to resolve disputes, we encourage you to come and speak to one of you supervisors to gain additional support in maintaining a happy work life!
6. Attendance
An occasional sick day or late arrival is not a big deal if handled appropriately. Excessive or patterns of absence/tardiness may require that we reduce hours or take shifts away if consistent attendance cannot be maintained.
Lateness:
STANDARD:
You are ready for work (gear on, awake, fed/watered, before you punch) within 15 minutes (before or after) of your scheduled start time.
If you aren’t sure whether you can work or not, then you can call and speak with your manager about your issue.
We require that you will call in sick or late before your scheduled start time. If you do not, you may be counted as a no-show.
IF YOU WILL BE MORE THAN 15 MINUTES AFTER YOUR SCHEDULED START TIME:
You must notify the office and tell them what time you expect to arrive. Do not say “late”, please give an approximate time you expect to be at work.
Eg. “ I will be late, arriving around 11:30 am. Will update you if that changes.” “Not before 11am”, “Probably as late as 1pm”, “Between 10 to 10:30 am”, “Around noon”
You can message to the Sick/Late chat through the WhenIWork app
Call 604.253.8481 and tell them what time you expect to arrive
You can email recycle@capitalsalvage.ca
The office will send the info out to the necessary people so we can adjust
Calling in sick:
Notice at the earliest possible moment is needed. If you feel sick the night before and are unsure, let the front desk know by the methods outlined above.
If you choose to message the WIW chat, do not add details. Eg: “I am not able to work today”. You can provide details to your supervisor later, instead of sharing with all staff.
If you wake up sick, and it is after 8:00 am, please call the office and speak to someone
NO SHOWS are unacceptable and may result in suspension or termination
If you are off sick, you must call in and let us know each day you will be away
If you are away for more than 2 days in a row, you must provide some documentation of the reason. Eg. a doctor’s note.
